After a sold out first season, Urbanity Dance, a Boston-based contemporary dance company, now in its second season, presents its first winter concert! Founded by a Boston College alumna, Betsi Graves Akerstein ’04, Urbanity Dance presents Big Red Door & Other Stories on Saturday, February 20, 2010. Performances will be held at the BU Dance Theatre at 2:00pm and 7:30pm, wtih a post-performance discussion and question/answer session to follow the 2:00p.m. matinee.
The performance, Big Red Door & Other Stories, features six new works, with four pieces choreographed by founder, Betsi Akerstein’04, one by guest choreographer Michelle Chassé and one by guest choregographer and BC alumna, Katherine Kelly Apple ’08.
In addition to its founder and guest choreographer, six other Boston College alums will take the stage next to Betsi for Big Red Door & Other Stories. BC alumni dancers in the show include: Jonathan Arpino ’09, Kate Patten Cook ’06, Carolyn Dumser ’07, Jennifer Fo ’09, Julia Harding ’07, Meghan O’Hare’06. Together with their fellow company members, these BC dancing graduates,will perform in pieces presented as a series of short dance stories fashioned after children’s book titles.
Throughout the show, the audience will be stimulated with pieces drawn from such inspirations as: Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five, GPS and Google Maps, grass, a little black dress, the moon, childhood innocence and Bob Fosse. From a post-modern take on time-travel to finding out what lies beneath the surface, Big Red Doors & Other Stories, drives the audience on a journey filled with both metaphorical and physical twists and turns through the expression of dance.
