Covering Photography: Imitation, Influence and Coincidence

Boston College Fine Arts Professor, Karl Baden, will be the guest curator at his alma-mater, Syracuse University, class of 1974. The Syracuse University Library’s spring 2010 exhibition: Covering Photography: Imitation, Influence and Coincidence will be displayed from January 19th-April 30th, 2010 in the Special Collections Research Center gallery on the sixth floor of Bird Library. During this period, the library will host a Gallery Talk by Professor Baden on March 2, 2010 on the sixth floor at 5:00pm.

How many times have you picked up a book based not on its title or storyline, but by its cover art? Professor Baden attempts to explore the links between the cover art of books and their connections to photographs. Baden founded his own web-based archive Covering Photography in 2005 which is used to study the relationship between the history of photography and book cover design. Like Baden’s web-site, Covering Photography: Imitation, Influence and Coincidence focuses on comparing cover art of selected books, with the photographs from which they may have been influenced from.
